Play at "The Pung"

At Pung Intended, we believe the magic of Mah Jongg isn't just in the strategy and the tiles—it's in the community that forms around the table. Our mission is to build a welcoming space where every player, from the complete beginner to the seasoned pro, feels at home.

Located with convenient access to Morris and Essex counties in NJ, the Pung is an in-person American Mah Jongg destination.  We have a full selection of classes and events:  find your rhythm in our lessons and gain confidence during our guided and open play sessions.  We provide the opportunity for you to connect with other local players. Join us, make some friends and discover why we say the best part of mah jongg is the people you play it with.

MAH JONGG...
What is American mah jongg?

Mahjong is a 19th-century Chinese tile-based game—often compared to Western rummy—where players draw and discard tiles to build specific winning combination.  American mah jongg was standardized in the 1930's by a group of American Jewish women who established the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), a charitable organization that to this day publishes an annual card establishing the winning hands for the current playing year.

How long does an American mah jongg game usually last?

The length of a game depend upon each player's experience level.  A beginner game can last for up to an hour.  Expert players may complete a game in as little as 15 minutes.  As you become familiar with the mechanics and pace of the game you can expect an average of 30-45 minutes per game.

Lessons
What level of experience do I need?

We welcome all levels. We offer classes from beginner to intermediate levels.  Our beginner series assumes zero prior knowledge, advanced beginner to develop stronger skills and advanced strategy sessions are perfect for players fully comfortable with the game and its rhythm.  If you don't see what you are looking for, please reach out.  Our schedule is always evolving.

What do I need to bring to the lessons?

Come with an open mind and a notepad if you think you will want to take notes. We provide everything else needed to play except for your National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card. We have some available for sale on site or can help you order one if needed.

Events
What is provided at Guided and Open Play?

We provide regulation tables, mats, racks and a choice of standard or artistic tiles. There is an option to play at one of our two electronic tables.  Light refreshments including coffee, tea and water are also included. We will also share a short lesson, many of which have been developed by one of the myriad mah jongg studios around the country.  While teachers will be available for questions and general guidance, open play assumes you can hold your own playing at a table of individuals at roughly your play level.  Individual tables will play at their own pace.  If you are looking for guided play, limited chairs will be available at most open play sessions for an additional fee.

Are visitors allowed at events?

Unfortunately, we do not allow spectators at our events.

Leagues
How do league points work?

Points are allocated based on daily wins, pung bonuses, and seasonal consistency. Rankings are updated weekly on our portal.

Can I join mid-season?

League entry is typically restricted to season starts for fairness, but we offer a 'Substitute' list for mid-season openings.

General Policies
What is your cancellation policy?

Since we have limited availability for all of our events, we are unable to provide refunds.  However,

Are private events available?
